A recent study co-authored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory research professor James L. Davis supports the growing consensus that sea level rise – particularly along the northeastern U.S. coast – has been accelerating since 1990. The processes that affect sea level rise are varied and will affect coastal communities differently; melting ice caps, changes in ocean circulation and land movements all contribute to rising seas in locally distinct ways. For example, in its 2015 report, the New York City Panel on Climate Change found that NYC’s local rate of sea level rise was nearly twice the global rate, due to a combination of land subsidence and climate-related factors.
In the absence of a one-size-fits-all approach to rising seas, NYC and other coastal communities need to assess potential impacts and solutions in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary way. On July 12, from 6-8pm, the Earth Institute will bring together experts from science, government and the private sector to discuss causes, implications and possible adaptation strategies for sea level rise.
