Upcoming Information Sessions: Master of Arts in Climate and Society

Master of Arts program in Climate and Society

By Arezou Paksima

Climate and Society’s intensive 12-month curriculum gives students a firm understanding of the global and regional dynamics of climate change, knowledge of statistical methods for evaluating the impacts of climate change, as well as a familiarity with stakeholder politics and the policymaking process to implement change. Along with the core courses, students choose five electives to tailor the program to their own interests. These electives can be taken across Columbia’s graduate schools, which include the School of International and Public Affairs, The Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia’s Law School, and Business School, as well as in the many academic departments that constitute the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The capstone of the MA degree is a choice between a summer internship and a research thesis.

Now in it’s seventh year, the Master of Arts program in Climate and Society has over 140 alumni working in diverse fields in the non-profit, government, and private sectors working as policy analysts, educators, program managers, environmental engineers, and climate science advisors. Some graduates have gone on to PhD programs in diverse fields including Atmospheric Science, Political Science, Geography, Public Health, International Education, Earth and Environmental Science, and Earth and Environmental Engineering.
