Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development alumna, Hannah Perls, takes her degree to El Salvador, where she is responsible for program development at Foundation Cristosal, a non-profit human rights NGO.
The Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development is currently accepting applications for Fall 2014 Teaching Assistant positions.
Typically in New York City, each person generates four pounds of waste every day. This means over eight million people generating about 33 million pounds of waste, every day. Think of the impact that composting and recycling could have on reducing even just half of this waste. Educating people on these issues is the mission of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, a non-profit organization that works toward a more sustainable New York City.
This semester, the Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development was pleased to host Carey Clinton, Regional Recruiter, and BriAnne Watkins, Assessment Specialist Recruiter, of the Peace Corps at the Earth Institute as part of the Sustainability Speaker Series.
The Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development kicked off their Spring 2014 Speaker Series with Dr. Regina Santella, Center Director of the NIEHS Center for Environmental Health in Northern Manhattan, who spoke on the Center’s mission as well as her own research against deadly diseases.
This past December, seniors in the Capstone Workshop in Sustainable Development delivered their final presentations to fellow students and faculty at Columbia University. The workshop is a required course for students in the Sustainable Development major or special concentration.
The Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development was pleased to host representatives from Columbia’s Office of Environmental Stewardship on Friday, December 6, for its final Speaker Series event of 2013.
The Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development was pleased to host Katy Mixter, a program associate at Citigroup, on Friday November 8th at the fourth of six autumn brown bag events for undergraduates. The topic of sustainability in the private sector attracted both undergraduate and graduate students from various programs. Mixter, who works on Citi’s corporate sustainability program, talked to students about the organization’s internal environmental initiatives as well as ways Citi works with clients to promote environmental sustainability.
As part of the fall semester Capstone Workshop in Sustainable Development, seniors in the Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development have partnered with organizations in the New York area to work on a range of projects aimed at combatting challenges to sustainability. This semester’s clients include West Point Academy, the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, and West Harlem Environmental Action, Inc.
Students in the Undergraduate Program for Sustainable Development were joined by the Columbia community at large to hear Ilana Judah, Senior Associate and Director of Sustainability at FXFOWLE Architects, speak on sustainable architecture.
