Administrative Internships Offered by the Office of Academic and Research Programs

The Earth Institute is pleased to announce the following internship opportunities for Fall 2014:

1. Part-Time Internship, MS in Sustainability Management Program 

Application Deadline:  September 1, 2014 

Job Description: The Earth Institute seeks a part-time intern to support the Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MSSM) graduate program during the fall 2014 semester.  Major assignments for the summer will be related to the admissions cycle, including assisting in tracking and compiling data on MSSM students, applicants, and prospective applicants and preparation for the Orientation. Intern responsibilities will also include maintaining the professional development website and drafting program updates for various Earth Institute communications, and assisting in staffing events and meetings.  Finally, the interns will support program faculty and program staff as needed.  

Requirements: Applicants must be full-time students at either Columbia or Barnard.  Applicants cannot be employed by any other University department or hold any teaching assistant positions. Current MSSM students are ineligible. 

Skills Required:  The position requires excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. The candidate must be able to work well under pressure, coordinate diverse responsibilities and exercise independent judgment. The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.  Previous administrative experience is preferred.  Applicants should be highly motivated, and detail oriented. A strong interest in the environment and sustainable development is preferred, but not required. 

Compensation: $15/hour, 15-20 hours a week.

2. Part-Time Internship, Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development

Application Deadline: September 8, 2014

Job Description:  The Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development is looking for a part-time intern for the fall semester to assist with program administration.  The program, which consists of a major and a special concentration, benefits from the pioneering work of Earth Institute faculty and researchers in the field of sustainable development. We currently have over 100 students in the program and are looking for someone to help with writing, editing, research, data analysis and event planning. This position is a unique opportunity to help support our cutting-edge educational program at Columbia University.   The program seeks an intern to work with a dynamic team on various tasks, including but not limited to: writing stories on events, researching current events and news in the field of sustainable development, copy-editing documents, preparing materials for meetings, analyzing program data and assisting with event set up.

Skills Required: Strong writing, editing and communications skills; strong Microsoft Office Suite skills; ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments; experience with Twitter, Facebook and blogging as well as other social media is a plus; must have highly professional email and telephone conduct

Type of Student Desired: Undergraduate.  Note that students in the Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development are ineligible.

Compensation: $15/hour, 15-20 hours a week

3. Administrative Intern, Office of Academic and Research Programs 

Application Deadline: September 8, 2014

Job Description: The Office of Academic and Research Programs is seeking one intern to assist with office clerical work as well as marketing and communications support with a Senior Program Manager.  The intern will work in three main areas: office administration, communications, and student program support.

Responsibilities: Assisting with maintaining and editing a contact database of over 180,000 people; assist with communications and web-based content development; assist with event logistics; assist with strategic planning for communications campaigns which include web, email, and print; organizing and distributing grant application materials; other tasks as assigned.

Skills Required: Excellent organizational skills, familiarity with Microsoft Office, be an independent worker.

Type of Student Desired: Any

Compensation: $15/hour, up to 20 hours per week

4. Fall Outreach Internship – All Ivy Environmental and Sustainable Development Career Fair 

Application Deadline: September 17, 2014

Job Description: The Earth Institute is seeking two interns to work on outreach for the All Ivy Environmental and Sustainable Development Career Fair, which will take place on February 27, 2015.  Each year, the All Ivy Career Fair brings some 75 recruiters that are hiring for full/part time jobs and internships, to meet with over 1000 Ivy League students at Columbia University. We are looking for highly motivated, professional interns to assist with outreach and follow up to organizations. The ideal interns will have experience in marketing, sales or advertising and will bring energy and enthusiasm to the task of getting incredible organizations to attend the 2015 Career Fair. 

Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:  cold-calling organizations to invite them to the career fair; managing email follow up to organizations; maintaining an up-to-date spreadsheet of contacts, outreach and follow up steps; helping to prepare materials for the career fair; and staffing career fair February 27, 2015. Other duties related as assigned.

Skills Required: Applicants should be highly motivated, detail oriented and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate will be personable, pro-active and able to work in a fast-paced environment while remaining organized and precise. A background in marketing, sales, or advertising is preferred, but not required. Advanced Excel skills desirable.

Type of Student Desired:  Undergraduate or Graduate.

Compensation:  $15/hour, 15-20hours/week. Position to start ASAP and continue through March 2015.
