Innovative Undergraduate Programs
As an undergraduate, you can choose from a variety of subject areas, including the new undergraduate program in sustainable development, earth and environmental sciences; earth and environmental engineering; ecology, evolution, and environmental biology; environmental biology; environmental science; environmental policy and sustainable development. The sustainable development program comprises a major and special concentration that prepares you to address the most pressing issues that society faces, such as providing food, energy and other basics for the world’s population, while maintaining the planet’s climate and ecosystems.
Beyond the Classroom
As an undergraduate student you have access to an array of resources, including field research funds, research assistantships, internships and the diverse expertise of hundreds of researchers and on-the-ground experts associated with the Earth Institute and Columbia University. Past interns and research assistants have worked on projects focused on things such as water-harvesting systems in India, sustainable planning for Haiti and urban agriculture in New York City.
Each semester funding is made available for students to conduct fieldwork related to their degree through the Travel Grant Program, and for sustainable development students through the Global Fellows in Sustainable Development Program. In addition, sustainable development students can participate in an international academic-exchange program as part of the Global Honors College. Through the Summer Ecosystem Experience for Undergraduates (SEE-U) program, students can earn academic credit while gaining field experience in countries like Puerto Rico, Jordan and Brazil.
