CGHED’s Patricia Mechael featured on PBS NewsHour

With the surge of cell phone technology in developing countries and the increased use of mobile phones for banking, the global health field is finding new ways to capitalize on these converging sectors to benefit the health of the poor. PBS NewsHour released a piece last week highlighting the opportunity and describing how mobile baking increases safety, efficiency, and access to health services in developing countries.

As a leading expert on the use of mobile technology to benefit public health, The Earth Institute’s Patricia Mechael comments in the article on some of the advantages of mobile banking systems, including the ability to pay health workers on the spot rather than wasting work-time collecting salaries. The Center for Global Health and Economic Development (CGHED) mobilizes health research and programs that enable low-resource countries to develop quality health systems for the poor, promote sustainable economic development and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – global targets for reducing extreme poverty and hunger and improving education, health, gender equality and environmental sustainability.  For more information about CGHED’s work, please visit our website.
