COP16 event on Climate Services & Disaster Risk

The Earth Institute’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society is hosting a side session called Climate Services and Disaster Risk Management at this years’s Conference of the Parties in Cancún, Mexico. The purpose of the event is to illustrate how partnerships between the climate and humanitarian communities have saved lives, protected livelihoods and alleviated suffering in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Humanitarian organizations continue to shift from a ‘response’ mentality to policies and strategies that emphasize preparedness and risk reduction. At the same time, meteorological services, climate scientists and others are reorganizing around the notion of climate services for development, adaptation and disaster-risk-management. These two groups share a common objective of protecting lives and livelihoods, and this objective can best be realized by collaboration.

The session will be chaired by Jan Egeland, the former United Nations Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator and current member of the High-level Taskforce for the Global Framework for Climate Services.

It takes place on December 3 from 2:30-4 p.m. in the U.S. Center’s Meeting Room.
